JUNIPER FOREST: THE BEAUTIFUL FOREST OF ZIARAT, PAKISTAN

The place of Ziarat has the distinction of having the 2nd greatest area of juniper forest in the world. Its total forest area is 51,335 hectares which is 54 percent of the district’s total geographical place. The juniper forest is a protected region. A tree with a forty inches trunk is claimed to be 1000 years old, and there are numerous trees in Ziarat that are over 1000 – 5000 years old. The juniper wood is utilized for making pencils and other such commodities. But currently, it is being cut as a fuel wood, because of which the forests are fast depleting, especially in the wake of no valuable fresh plantation.

The Juniper Forest of Ziarat place have been involved in the heritage list of UNESCO since these have been here for such a long time period and have been witness to several civilizations that thrived and died around them.

Beside Juniper, which is the important species of trees, other major species involve Wild Ash; Wild Almond; Olea species; Khujak. The magic of Ziarat deploys in its honey-flowers which attain a huge size here, its lush green grass and cool weather even in the hottest months of summer season. ‘Shinshoab’ a lavender-like wild bush, looks lovely in twilights. Ziarat is also popular for its sweet apples, black and red cherry. The season of cherry lasts from the 1st to 15th of June month.
