Khawaja Muhammad Asif: The Minister of Defence of Pakistan

Khawaja Muhammad Asif (born on the day of 9 August 1949 in the city of Sialkot) is the Minister of Defense of Pakistan. A well-known Pakistani politician, banker, and cabinet member, he also serves the nation as the Minister for Water and Power.

A senior parliamentarian from the party of Pakistan Muslim League, his electoral career began in the Pakistan Senate in the year 1991. He is prominent for beginning the privatization of the banking sector as well as his powerful rhetoric against the former President Pervez Musharraf. Khawaja Muhammad Asif also held a short-tenure in the Petroleum ministry in the era of Gillani cabinet.

Biography of Khawaja Muhammad Asif

Khawaja Muhammad Asif was born in the city of Sialkot in the province of Punjab, Pakistan, on the day of 9 August 1949. He belongs to Kashmiri ancestry.

Career in politics

Khawaja Muhammad Asif was elected as the chairman of the Privatization Commission in the year 1997. His tenure was terminated by the former president General Pervez Musharraf after the Pakinstani self-coup in the year 1999. On the day of 12 October 1999, Khawaja Muhammad Asif was arrested, imprisoned, and was immensely tortured. Instead of pressure from the Pervez Musharraf to alter the allegiance, Khawaja Muhammad Asif remained loyal to the party of PML (N) and sustained to condemn Pervez Musharraf. In the year 2002, he again defended the NA-110 constituency in the year of 2002 general elections. From the time period of 2002 to 2007, Khawaja Muhammad Asif worked on the PML(N)’s programme’s PR strategy. In the year 2006, Asif criticized the character of the military. He drew much criticism both from the Pervez Musharraf as well as supporters of the military regime in the field of politics. Reacting to accusations and blames leveled against him by the military, Khawaja Muhammad Asif made a claim that he would sacrifice his life for the sake of military.

In the year 2008, Khawaja Muhammad Asif again stood for the NA-110 constituent during the time of general elections. He was briefly elected as the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, with another leadership post in the field of sports, before his party pulled out of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) -led coalition government in the year 2008.

From the period of 2009 to 2012, he filed the Public Interest Litigation against the case of corruption of the then Federal Government, involving Rental Power Plants case and LPG quota case.

In the year 2013 Asif defended the NA-110 constituency in the general elections against the politician Usman Dar of the PTI party and Firdous Ashiq Awan of the PPP party. In accordance to polling data, Asif gained 92,848 votes, or 52.4 percent. On the day of 7 June 2013, he was elected as the Ministry of Water and Power

After the appointments of the joint chief committee were completed, Khawaja Muhammad Asif was appointed as the Defence Minister. Upon becoming the Defence Minister Asif tightened government inquires on the former President Pervez Musharraf. Pervez Musharaff is now being tried for the case of treason.

Other problems

Dual nationality proceedings

A petition filed by the Supreme Court’s registrar claimed that Khawaja Muhammad Asif holds dual nationality, and hence, in accordance to Pakistan’s constitution, he isn’t eligible to hold public office in the country of Pakistan. On the day of 4 June 2012 the FIA and the Supreme Court of Pakistan started an inquiry pursuing investigations of the Asif’s dual nationality blames. The petition also involved names of 13 other present members of National and Provincial assemblies in the country of Pakistan. The court didn’t find him guilty of the blames petitioned against him; the petitioner who leveled the blames withdrew the accusations and released a formal apology.
